We had a fantastic time in Costa Rica, and during our visit to the Encantada Ocean Cottages. Yes, the beef burrito was prepared per my daughter’s request – much appreciated. Additionally, I also recall us arriving in the middle of the week and you preparing dinner for us even though we were the only people staying that night. We recognize the work required to feed only us. We also appreciate that when my wife asked for a margarita that you explained that you did not have tequila, but went out and bought some the next day. Although your breakfast hours started later than we needed on two mornings, you were up and preparing us breakfast earlier than normal to accommodate our schedules. I also cannot forget your efforts to help us with reservations and excursions during our stay.

Our stay at Encantada was very relaxing and accommodating. The service was fantastic and we appreciated the conversation with you every day.

I will prepare a more formal note to you to say thank you, but did want to sent to you email in a timely manner. I do also plan to post on Trip Advisor (a positive review), as well as let my travel agent know how pleased we were.

All the best to you and thank you for your hospitality..

Thank you,

“New Manager Understands Definition of "Guest"”

Reviewed October 9, 2014

We found this hotel while exploring the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Harold the new manager explained that his instructions to the staff are "if a guest wants it and you know it is the right thing to do.....do it ! We found the A/C room clean and comfortable. The staff enjoyed our mascoda Yorkie and were friendly and gracious. Our off season rate included a nice breakfast, free internet and lots of personal help and attention from the manager and staff. Dinner prices were fair and the food was excellent. It is across the road from a long sandy beach. When the surf is up it is pretty strong as the beach is a direct hit from the Pacific ocean. They have a nice clean pool and enough staff that we felt safe. Highly recommend and hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did !

“Quaint, quiet & relaxing and great location! Check it out!”

Met my sisters and stayed here for a week where the property is on the beach and there are 7 cottages. It was our first time to Costa Rica, The town of Jaco is 1/2 hour away and about 1 1/2 hrs from airport of San Jose. Encantada is lovely, quaint, quiet and relaxing. Good for everyone. They have bikes, surfboards, horseshoes and a number of outdoor games. Owners and staff are friendly and able to help with any questions. Walked the beach every morning where you can walk for miles in either direction. They have a pool that is basically surrounded by most of the cottages. The beds are comfortable and bedding pillows were wonderful. There are many excursions you can do locally or you can just relax in one of their numerous hammocks on the property with a book, walk the beach and go for a dip. They have a restaurant for their guests and the food and drinks were very good. We loved the bean dip so much we ordered it every night. There is also a restaurant a few doors down on either side if you decide you want to try somewhere different and don't want to drive. We will definitely be back.

“Review of the restaurant in Encantada”

Reviewed July 16, 2014

This review is for the restaurant in Encantada, we did not stay in this property as we are renting a house along the beach.
The cocinero, Gerald, was at first aloof but still friendly; I ordered Costa Rican burrito and my husband ordered Rib Eye. While waiting, he served as a crisp pieces of something and later found that it is called malanga (root family) with black bean dip. Delicious!!
He grills all the entrees and he makes a superb sauce. Our dishes was very delicious.
We came back for the 2nd time and this time I had fish and he mentioned 4 different kinds of fish and I finally picked a fish I have not heard of: snook - he topped it caper sauce. Muy deliciouso!! My husband is boring - he again got the steak but that steak is so great that I dont blame him.

Time to unplug, relax, and rejuvenate”

Reviewed July 13, 2014

After some vacations to the Caribbean and Central America for snorkeling, diving, boating, and sightseeing Mayan ruins, we needed a vacation to unplug, relax, and rejuvenate.

We wanted a quiet, end-of-the-road, relaxing time at a smaller locale. A place where we could go for long walks on a secluded beach, flop around pool-side, and enjoy excellent seafood and local dishes. Choice of hammocks swinging under tall palm trees a plus. And if we decided to take a side-trip, we wanted to be able to do that, too.

This is what we got at Encantada Ocean Cottages. Other reviewers have gone into much detail about specifics so I won't do that here. Just to say: this is the place to go to completely unwind and get away from it all. Herald makes this place happen. He's the manager and the head chef, and so much more. The meals he concocts out of his kitchen with one assistant are simply amazing. We enjoyed 8 nights of his cooking. Wow. Seafood you just can't get in the U.S. Fresh veggies like you can't get in the U.S. Even the mashed potatoes. Flavor unending. (What are we doing to our food supply in the U.S.?) Herald will make arrangements for any day trips you'd like to take. We ended up not doing any because, like I said, our purpose was to completely relax.

We stayed in the seaside cottage. Extremely comfortable bed. Clean tiled floor. "Open"-style bathroom with roughed-in floors and stone/concrete in the large shower area. Lovely view from the front porch. Breakfast is delicious local fruits, coffee, juices, toast, and home-made "cupcakes". (Tip: Wear DEET to dinners in the outside restaurant; the mosquitoes are rough.)

Thank you, Herald and staff, for making our stay so nice, so relaxing. You made us feel so welcome; and we felt so sad when leaving!

Pura Vida! Todos Bien!

You should stay here!”

My boyfriend and I were looking for a nice, relaxing end to our hiking adventure in Costa Rica. Let me tell you, this was beyond perfect. It is the "green" season there, which basically means 1. It's super sunny from 6am until 2pm, then it rains, 2. Less tourists, and 3. Everything is way cheaper. We got upgraded to a nicer room for no extra charge, which was wonderful! The beds here, let me just tell you, are unbelievably comfortable. The cleaning staff may have thought we were insane because we basically took all the sheets off trying to figure out the brand so we could buy one at home. And the pillows! And the linens! Second best bed I've EVER slept in, behind one in SF that I'm pretty sure can't be beat. The cabins are cozy, clean, and cool. The water is hot in the showers, and the AC worked wonderfully. The hotel itself is right on the beach, and we sat out there for hours without seeing another person. You can walk miles in either direction without seeing another human. It was amazing! The hotel itself has a pool, bikes, surfboards, and a plethora of games (recreational and board). We never left and were never bored (2 days). We interacted almost exclusively with Herald, who was professional, helpful, and fun (and who speaks great English). He made his own cornhole set and played with us, enough said. He was also our bartender and our chef, and DANG was everything delicious. HUGE drinks (we made margs and coladas) for I think $6 each. He took an entire fresh pineapple and made a pina colada from it. And then he used the carved out pineapple as the glass. Yes, that big. For dinners we had the ribeye (whiskey marinated and grilled) and the whole red snapper (wood fired with potatoes and veggies), and they were both fantastic. We split each dinner between the two of us, and the snapper was an absolute steal (something around $18). Breakfast was light and delicious (and included). Yogurt, toast, cereal, fruit, juice, coffee, etc...At night (which is typically boring pretty much anywhere in CR) Herald plays movies in the restaurant area to liven up the scene. Any movie you want really; he suffered through the immature hilarity of Eurotrip with us! There's chickens running around, one of whom is completely adorable and thinks Herald is her Papa. She has her own bed in the movie area :) All in all, no real bad things to say. We got lunch next door at the Pelican something, which was also fantastic. Large portions here, so consider splitting if you're budgeting. I just really can't believe how much of a value this place was--it's astounding. For 2 days of food and lodging, my total had a 2-- in front of it. A LOW 2--. I will definitely be coming back here, 100%. Adored it. Thank you!

Relaxing Getaway”

Reviewed June 4, 2014

We were looking for a quiet getaway for our family (2 adults, a 6 yo, and a 4 yo), away from San Jose, away from Jaco, but not too far from the airport (Quepos felt like too far to drive after just arriving in CR). It was the perfect beginning to our CR vacation. It would also be a nice relaxing end to a CR vacation down the south pacific side. After an overnight flight, we were exhausted and ready to relax. Well, that's about all we did for our first 3 nights. We were just going to stop in for a night or two but we loved it so much we stayed an extra night. If we had more time, we would've stayed much longer and we were in CR to find a place to live, and as much as we would like to, I don't think we could live permanently at Encantada, though we dream about it. Our main goal at Encantada was to relax and unwind. The beach there was practically deserted while we were there. There were surfboards for us to use, so my husband and daughter went out a few times. There were bikes, too, but with the kids we couldn't make use of them. The beach sand is hard enough where you can go for long bike rides right on the sand! We lounged in their beautiful new hammocks, we swam in their sparkling clean refreshing pool, we went searching for giant sand dollars, and we went walking for miles without passing a single person (well, one fisherman) on the beach. They also had activites on the lawn that the kids liked (ring toss, badminton, soccer, horse shoes, etc). The rooms were cozy beach cottages. We really felt like were on a beach vacation with our doors opening up to the beach and our porch area steps from the sand. They also have their own private restaurant and the food was excellent. Even their version of the CR casado plate was the most delicious one we had during our whole stay in CR. Though, as with most restaurants in CR, the food could get expensive, we chose to eat there every day because we just loved the food so much. We had a small burner and microwave in our room but we decided not to leave the grounds to buy our own food because for these 3 days we wanted to just chillllllll. There are large supermarkets about a 20 minute drive, and a tiny supermarket 2 towns over, that we visited for snacks and sundry goods. There is not much other than other small low key resorts in the town so it's best to just relax and stay put and then take day trips down to Rainmaker or Quepos. We would rather stay here and visit Manuel Antonio than stay in Manuel Antonio or Quepos (too busy down there!). Herald, the property manager, was a friendly face during our entire visit. He helped us get settled, helped us with our spanish, explained to us customs in CR, and such. We felt better prepared for our CR trip after our free cultural consultation with him. Some of the recipes are from him, and they are delicious! We were also fortunate to be there when the owers Tiffany and Noam were there. They were so friendly and helpful. They got a bonfire for us going one night, Tiffany took my daughter searching for shells, and they provided us with much information about CR. They are also passionate about their place, and lucky for you, they'll be living their full time soon. They told us about all the changes they had made to the place and all the changes that were still to come. I imagine this place will only get better and better. One more thing, the place is compact so my husband and I could relax at the restaurant while the kids swam in the pool nearby or played on the lawn or went out to the sand. You could spread out and relax. The other guests were mostly Costa Ricans and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves, too.

Encantada is great”

Reviewed May 29, 2014

We stumbled onto Encantada a year ago for one night, loved it, and just returned for a much longer stay.
My wife and I took our two boys, 4 and 2, with us and though I think there are a lot of better spots in Costa Rica (I like to hike in the jungle and fish, and this isn't the best spot to do either on location), this was a perfect spot for a long family.
Encantada has a lot of great advantages, being relatively close to San Jose, the pool is clean and great for the kids, it's a very slow sloping beach so we felt safe playing on it with the boys, the beach is great in that it feels like you have an entire beach to yourself. It's a good location for day trips as Quepos, Jaco, Rainmaker are all less than an hour away by car.
The food at the restaurant is great, a little costly but delicious. The rooms are very clean and the place is kept up well. It's quiet and cozy and a great place to stay for one or seven nights.

Our stay at Encantada was too short. We had the most relaxing laid back vacation and have absolutely no complaints. From the cozy cabanas, inviting swimming pool, to the helpful friendly people that are there to help and serve in anyway they can. Travel from the airport was easy as well. Have to say we'll definitely be back, but next time we'll stay a bit longer. Great times!!!

What a great change this last visit was from the first a year ago. The room was clean, the beds were like sleeping on a cloud compaired to the old lumpy bedding. We had new linen and the redone bathrooms are so much better with new sinks ,toilets ,showers and towels. You can tell the new owners really care about the guests and their needs. The grounds looked great and the guest area finally did not smell like dirty dogs and was clean , bright and welcoming. The food was a great improvement over the barely passable food of the past. Much improved ,much better and I am told this is only the beginning. Keep up the great job and I can't wait until my next trip to Costa Rica and Encantada Ocean Cottages

“Great secluded location and excellent service! Highly Recommend!”

Reviewed March 20, 2014

As all the other reviewers have already mentioned, it was Jerald and the staff there that made our stay so wonderful at Encantada. The grounds are very well maintained and the cottages are the perfect blend of rustic charm and very comfortable amenities, just don't expect the Ritz, this is more basic. Everyone in our group was extremely pleased. The food and drinks that are all prepared on site by Jerald and his staff of two are extremely good and well priced. Again, there is no reason to leave the grounds if you want to experience relaxation and the best of Costa Rican beach life. It's away from the mess of tourist places in Jaco and Manual Antonio but close enough to get to everything still. It would be sad is Jerald leaves, so I hope for future visitors sake he doesn't. My only recommendation is to book directly through their website, the Airbnb is harder to use.

Jerald was what made this place run.”

Reviewed March 14, 2014

While the facilities were not top of the class, they were fine. Jerald, who we understand will not be there much longer, made it work. I noticed other reviewers have commented Jerald is overwhelmed. Our observations are much the opposite. If it wasn't for him, the experience, no doubt, would have been much less enjoyable. If, in fact, he is gone before too long, the owners are going to be hard pressed to replace him. He works constantly, and continually tries to assure a positive experience for his customers.

The location is wonderful, the food was very, very good considering the kitchen facilities Jerald and his staff had to work with. He prepared a special breakfast for us on the morning we left. He made arrangements for us to see various local sites. The staff was also very nice. This was a very positive experience for us.

We stayed two nights in Encantada Ocean Cottages. The cottage was very comfortable and spacious. The bedding was fantastic and the maid did an excellent job cleaning every day, which we didn't expect. Luckily it was air-conditioned since it was quite hot when we were there. The pool is very clean and they have many games out for people to enjoy. The porch where they serve dinner (quite good!) is beautiful with mini lights and great music in the evening. We enjoyed meeting new people there (other guests) and especially loved Jerold. He is especially helpful and kind and also a wonderful cook. The beach is beautiful and very clean with huge waves. The only thing regret I have is, I never got to try out the homemade cinammon rolls at the Bluegrass Cafe in Playa Hermosa down the road, they were closed on Monday.

We totally enjoyed our stay. The staff if so friendly and helpful. They are the ones who really make this place special. We love the location, right on Playa Esterillos, which is just south of Jaco. This place is centrally located on the Pacific coast but far from the crowds of Manuel Antonio and Jaco. Lying in a hammock on the beach, looking up at the coconut nuts, listening to the scarlet macaws and ocean, I felt like I was on opiates. The pool is clean and pleasant. They have recently updated the rooms but the construction is old so not all of our windows closed all the way. It is not a luxurious, big resort where they wait on you hand and foot so don't expect that. It is a clean, quiet, well run boutique hotel. The food was delicious and portions were large. I just wish there was a refrigerator in the room so I could keep the leftovers. Encantada was our favorite part of our two week vacation

The staff- best service ever! They went above and beyond to make our stay pleasant. I mentioned I needed some nail polish remover and the next day Gerald the manager had some for me. My daughter wanted a fire on the beach and they build her the biggest Bon fire she had ever seen.
The cottages- the pool was clean and the perfect temperature! There's a nice play area for kids in the shade with ball, bad mitton and a few other toys. TONS of hammocks all over.
The food- delicious fresh fish, coffee all day- everything we are was great. There's also a couple hotels near that have bigger menus.

The cottages are very clean & comfortable! Super soft, comfy pillows! Their restaurant is fantastic! We had breakfast & dinner there daily. Highly recommend trying the traditional Costa Rican fresh fish dinner prepared on the open fire. Huge portions! Share a plate if you aren't a big eater.

We were lucky to have the pleasure of meeting the new owners, Tiffany & Nome. They have a beautiful vision for the property & I can't wait to see the future yoga addition! Paradise!”

From the moment we arrived at Encantada Cottages I knew we were in a truly special place. For starters, let me say that I have traveled extensively, and stayed at some of the world's finest hotels (and many not so fine!). To be honest, we started planning our Christmas trip to Costa Rica a bit late, and the places I would have chosen first were all booked up.....but did that ever turn out to be a blessing in disguise!

Trusting Trip Advisor reviews, I went ahead and reserved 5 nights in one of the cabinas at Encantada, not expecting to find much for such a reasonable price. When we first set foot on the property and saw the lovely, clean pool and the gorgeous beach just steps away through the lush palm trees, hammocks swaying in the breeze, I literally started to cry. It was PERFECT! And it just kept getting better....

Our warm, friendly host Gerald greeted us with fresh juice and a smile. We were shown to Cabina 1, one of just a handful of adorable little cottages. The beds were comfortable, the a/c worked well, and our family of five (sharing one bathroom!) found plenty of space to settle in. Though I did not think I would survive without hot water (the hotel's one flaw!) I was surprised to find that cool showers were ok, even refreshing. There was a loft with one single bed, and two queens on the ground floor. The sheets were wonderfully soft, and plenty of towels were provided for both bath and beach. Breakfast was simple, but more than adequate, with fruit, juice, good coffee, and toast, plus eggs cooked to order, Gallo pinto (Costa Rican rice and beans...totally yummy!) omelets, etc. available. The resort is in the process of increasing its restaurant offerings, and we were happy to stay put for lunches of wood grilled fresh fish and chicken, and dinners of typical Costa Rican specialties lovingly prepared by Gerald and Linda. Other nights we went nearby to sample some of the neighboring resorts' cuisine.....great meals everywhere!

The beach was spectacular: clean soft brown sand, gentle surf, flat, and endless. It was also practically deserted, despite the perfect weather and busy tourist season. We walked for miles, picking up seashells and sand dollars as we went. Boogie boards were available. The palms provided shade, and there were plenty of hammocks and a few chairs for relaxing and watching the gorgeous sunsets. One of the nights, Herald made a beach bonfire for us under the stars.

The atmosphere was one of total peace and relaxation, the setting nothing short of sublime. Our hosts met our every need with information about tours, restaurants, riptides, and so much more. But beyond that, they made us feel like part of their family. My only hesitation about recommending this place is that I don't want it to become impossible to reserve a room here ever again! We cannot wait to return

My husband, daughter and her fiancé just returned from a week at the Encantada Cottages. Encantada provided us with a tranquil and serene environment that was very much appreciated.

This hotel is very recently under new management, with Herald and Linda at the helm, providing impeccable service to the guests. We felt no pressure during our stay to do anything but relax! Dinner is served nightly, with very healthy and local food options. During the day, you can choose to relax by the pool, on the beach, or in one of the many hammocks that swing below the palm trees on the property. The hotel has books, games, yoga mats, surf lessons and NO TV (which we loved!). If you are looking for blasting music, and lots of people, this is NOT the place to come. Special thanks to Herald and Linda -- please change nothing about this place!
